MultiMalin, a Method for Learning Multiplication Tables

In 2015, building on the success of its first edition, Matthieu Protin decided to launch a new version of his MultiMalin method, with completely renewed visuals and the ambition of taking on the international market.

Web series – a method for learning multiplication tables — in French

MultiMalin, 3TOON edition

To meet the international ambition of the method’s new version, its author asked 3TOON to take on the artistic direction and production of the new animations, as well as the design of all the method’s printed materials — workbooks, card games, poster. The DVD authoring was added to the mission as well.

The MultiMalin method

The method’s author is a former teacher turned specialist in memorisation techniques for school learning. The originality of his method is that it allows children to learn their multiplication tables easily, using the mental techniques of world memory champions.

The method relies on the emotions and humour of its stories to reinforce the creation of mental images. The more emotion a child feels while discovering the stories, the easier the memorisation.

The animations on the DVD

MultiMalin DVD

The DVD contains 28 animations, each staging a multiplication in which the numbers are transformed into characters living a little adventure. Designed to strike children’s imagination through the comic — often extreme — nature of the situations, each of these short films aims to create mental images that foster long-term memorisation, while being playful and fun to watch.

The DVD format offers ideal viewing flexibility for repeated watching of these films — a key factor in the progressive assimilation of the multiplication tables.

The learning workbook

An essential companion to the DVD, the 80-page workbook presents each multiplication on a double page.

MultiMalin workbook, open

First, the child rediscovers in detail the little scene presenting the multiplication, then answers a series of questions checking that everything has been well understood and absorbed. The right-hand page follows up with an exercise validating what has been learned, and ends on a more playful note: the child is invited to colour in the scene, soaking up the story even further for better memorisation.

The MultiMalin card game

MultiMalin - the card game

To reinforce the assimilation of the multiplication tables, Matthieu Protin devised a card game for 1 to 4 players. Children must reconstruct a complete operation by pairing two of the cards. An ideal game to round out the memorisation strategy.

The game and exercise booklets

Alongside the DVD, the workbook and the card game, a whole series of booklets based on the MultiMalin universe was also developed, where children can keep consolidating what they have learned while having fun. These include colouring books illustrated with scenes from the DVD, as well as a revision workbook.

The standalone card game for supermarkets

Given the interest sparked by the method, Matthieu Protin also developed a variant, this time intended for supermarket distribution. The adaptation is a set of 56 large-format cards, very different from the one accompanying the DVD and workbook: this box is designed as a standalone product, carrying the entire method in an extremely compact format.

MultiMalin - the large card game

Supermarket distribution gives the widest possible audience access to this mental technique, which moves the multiplication tables from short-term (working) memory to long-term memory, with uncommon educational effectiveness.

To promote the MultiMalin method through Facebook Ads, this variant of the animation for the 3-times table was produced as a whiteboard animation.
